Google is prioritizing quality content over SEO-optimized content in its new updates because the company wants to ensure that people see more original, helpful content written by people, for people, in search results.
Google believes that SEO is a helpful activity when it’s applied to “people-first content,” but finds that content written primarily for search engine traffic is strongly correlated with content that searchers find unsatisfying.
For this reason, Google introduced a new site-wide signal that it will consider when ranking content, which rewards content that is deemed to be “helpful” (i.e. it’s people-first instead of search-engine first).
Any content that does not meet the criteria for being “helpful” will now be less likely to perform well in search.
